If you love canyons, you’ll love Canyon Day!

Students, faculty, staff and the community to join us for San Diego Mesa College's Canyon Day. Canyon Day is a free community event and clean-up of a branch of Tecolote Canyon adjacent to Mesa College. The event has evolved since its launch in 2007. This year Canyon Day will focus on the clean-up of Tecolote Canyon, followed by Canyon Talks during a brown bag lunch on the grounds of the P100/200 buildings. The community is invited to pitch in. Middle and high school students find Canyon Clean-up to be a wonderful learning activity that meets community service requirements.

ACTIVITIES Canyon Day: welcome; clean-up; refreshments/lunch with talks; canyon posters; canyon activities (plant, animal ID), speakers, canyon walks.

Canyon Clean-up will be led by Ranger Janice LaVallee, Parks and Recreation Department, City of San Diego

Canyon Talks: Eloise Battle, long-time advocate for the preservation of Tecolote Canyon

Mesa College Professor Jerrry Schad, hiker and outdoor enthusiast, columnist, and author of Afoot and Afield

Canyon Cleanup: Saturday, March 20th, 2010

9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Canyon Clean-up

12:00-2:00: Canyon Talks; Tours of the Green Garden on the Mesa, Poster Displays

Volunteers meet at the P-100/200 buildings (Nursery/Landscape Facility) near the corner of Genesee and Marlesta.

Not recommended for children under 14 years of age. Children under 18 must have TWO signed waiver slips (click here for Mesa College waiver form and City of San Diego Waiver Form) or be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Closed-toed shoes required. Questions? Call 619-388-2942.

San Diego Mesa College at the P-100/200 buildings (Nursery/Landscape Facility) near the corner of Genesee and Marlesta. Clean-up location: (Tecolote Canyon; meet near Genesee Ave/Marlesta Dr intersection)

Parking: Free parking is available at Student Parking Lot 1. Follow signs and walk down the hill to the P100/200 Buildings.

Canyon Classroom, Friday, April 16, 2009

Canyon Classroom is a community outreach program for local elementary school children planned and produced by students in Mesa’s teacher education program. Mesa student volunteers will assist with both the Canyon Cleanup and Canyon Classroom events. If you would like your elementary school to be considered for 2010, please call 619-388-2759.

Goal

In collaboration with representatives of the various communities surrounding Mesa College, create a for a community celebration that focuses on outreach, education and awareness around the issues of conservation of the environment and preservation of the Tecolote Canyon.
