San Diego, CA. — Tonight, San Diego Mesa College will honor the 2018 scholarship winners at the 25th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony. 175 students will be awarded approximately $240,000 in scholarships – the most ever awarded in the history of the College. The Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Mesa College Foundation, will take place tonight at 5:00 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Mission Valley.

San Diego Mesa College Foundation was selected to receive a generous grant from the Science and Technology Grants Program from the San Diego Foundation on January 15, 2018. This funded the opportunity for Mesa College STEM students to participate in a field trip on Friday, March 2, 2018 entitled Tierra Excursion. The trip included a tour of Wild Willow Farm, a sustainable farm with educational resources, and a visit to the Tijuana River Estuary, an area of land in Imperial Beach where the Tijuana River meets the Pacific Ocean.

Since 2012, the San Diego History Center and Mesa College’s Fashion Program have partnered to create and host a unique annual event: Fashion Redux. This year’s theme is Fashion Redux: 90 Years of Fashion features designs ranging from the late 1920’s to present time. Throughout early Spring, Mesa Fashion students have worked diligently to prepare their individual garments for the show and upcoming Grand Reveal event on April 26, 2018.

On March 7, the Mesa College celebration of Deaf Day took place in the Sunrise Plaza. The event commemorated the 30th Anniversary of the 1988 “Deaf President Now” student protest at Gallaudet University, leading to the first Deaf President of that institution since it was established in 1864. During the event, Mesa students learned lessons of silence, and the privilege attached to those without hearing disabilities.

On March 12, Mesa College honored Gracia Molina de Pick at the 7th Annual Feminist Lecture Series. Over 100 students, faculty, administrators and staff gathered to discuss the role of Chicanas in San Diego communities and the legacy that De Pick has left upon feminist lifestyle, especially for students at Mesa College.
