Recently, San Diego Mesa College discovered the posting of flyers across campus that targeted particular ethnic groups. The College followed its free speech policy, and only removed flyers that were improperly posted. This included postings on electronic signboards causing potential damage to college equipment. The Art Gallery was also impacted as materials were defaced with flyers posted over them. The incident was reported to District Police as well as the San Diego Police Department, who continue to monitor the situation.

San Diego Mesa College strongly opposes the racist language used by those who are posting these fliers. To be clear – any doctrine that elevates one group above another has no place at Mesa College and we condemn any language or actions that promote racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, violence, discrimination and other forms of hate.

J. Shawn Cvetezar and Naylynn Tañón of San Diego Mesa College have been selected as NASA Community Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) and will be participating in an onsite experience this February. NCAS is a highly competitive program that gives community college students the opportunity to meet and work with NASA engineers and scientists.

The award program was established in 2011 to recognize former students who have made significant contributions to society, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of academic excellence and equity at San Diego Mesa College.

During the 2017 Fall semester at San Diego Mesa College, a class of advanced Interior Design students collaborated on a real-life project with the STEM Center Staff to redesign the space in the STEM Center. This project was organized and completed under the supervision of Professor of Interior Design, Farida Gabdrakhmanova as a part of the Interior Design 205 – Non-Residential Space Planning course.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 Mesa College hosted the Fashion Design and Discovery Showcase – Meet the Designers. The group of advanced fashion students initially presented their finished garments at the Fashion Showcase hosted by the Salk Institute for Biological Studies on Oct. 4, 2017.

San Diego, CA. Tonight, San Diego Mesa College will present the “Design and Discovery Fashion Showcase – Meet the Designers”, an event showcasing garments of Mesa College Fashion students. Earlier this year, the Mesa College Fashion Program proudly partnered with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies ‘Women In Science’ program to create wearable designs inspired by scientific research.

During the Fall 2017 semester, Irena Stojimirovic, professor of astronomy at Mesa College collaborated with Boyce Research Initiatives & Education Foundation (BRIEF) and together they were awarded 115 hours of remote telescope time at Las Cumbres Observatory. This will increase educational opportunities for students at Mesa.

San Diego, CA. — San Diego Mesa College will be participating in GivingTuesday this year by accepting donations to The Stand. The Stand is the on campus food and clothing pantry that provides food, toiletries, and professional clothing to students at no charge.
