Fire on Campus
If there is a fire, stay calm and call (911). Give your name and the location of the fire. Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to do so.
- In a fire, always evacuate a building if the alarm is sounding.
- Upon discovering a fire, close the door to the room where the fire is located and immediately sound the building fire alarm.
When to use a Fire Extinguisher: If the fire is small and it is safe to do so, you may attempt to fight it with a fire extinguisher.

Portable fire extinguishers are located throughout all campus buildings to combat small, contained fires (e.g., a small trash can fire).
Remember the P.A.S.S. method:
- Pull the pin.
- Aim at the base of the fire.
- Squeeze the lever.
- Sweep from side to side.

- If the fire is large, very smoky, or spreading rapidly, sound the fire alarm and leave
the building immediately.
- Inform others in the building who may not have responded to the alarm to leave immediately.
- The alarm may not sound continuously. If the alarm stops, continue to evacuate the building and warn others who may attempt to enter the building.
- Do not block fire exits and ensure they are easily accessible. In the event of a fire, blocked exits can be deadly.
- If smoke is in the air, stay low to the ground. Smoke rises, and the air near the floor will be less toxic and easier to breathe.
For Individuals who use wheelchairs or have mobility issues: Evacuation Stair Chairs are located in every multi story building on campus. These specialized chairs are used to safely transport individuals with mobility impairments or injuries downstairs during an emergency when elevators are unavailable or unsafe to use. Being Prepared: Its always important to familiarize yourself with the fire safety plan and the evacuation routes for you building before an actual emergency occurs.
- Make sure you know the location of the nearest fire alarm and extinguisher to your classroom or office.
Fire Safety Tips
- Know the location of fire extinguishers in your area and how to use them.
- During evacuation, walk, don't run. Keep noise to a minimum. Close, but do not lock, doors to help contain fire and smoke. Do not use elevators. On stairways, use handrails and stay to the right. After evacuating, relocate to a safe assembly area and do not re-enter the building until told that it is safe to do so.
- If you suspect fire in the building, test doors before opening. Use the back of your hand to feel the door or doorknob. If it is hot, use another escape route.
- Be prepared. Know the location of the two exits closest to your area and all potential evacuation routes out of the building.
- Never prop open hallway doors, or lock fire exit doors.
- Report damaged or vandalized fire safety equipment using the Report a Safety Concern Form.
